Beijing - day 2

arrival at Nanluoguxiang

the local design community lives inside aged hutong

Nanluoguxiang Hutong (南锣鼓巷) is a community under the Beijing Cultural Heritage preservation scheme. it is a historical neighborhood where local folk culture are being supported and celebrated. interesting small shops lined along the many lanes within the hutong, selling original chinese style, culture inspired products such as paper-cut art, ornaments, handmade crafts and clothing. in recent years, westerners living in Beijing also like to start their design business within the ancient hutong. one of the example is Plastered T-shirts by Dominic Johnson-Hill from the UK. his printed tees took the local Beijing culture as subject and morphed it with a humorous twist.

check out Plastered here:

btw, while I did the shopping, I had the best freshly made corn juice and deep fried tofu there : )
