holiday beauty - Laura Mercier & Deborah Lippmann

it's the holiday season and cosmetic brands are heavily promoting their gift / holiday sets to boost sales. to me, it's the best time of the year to sample products you'd never tried before at a bang for the buck price. look beyond the glitzy glam packaging and holiday colors, I usually would go for the set which includes the star products / best sellers from the brand.

I've heard many good reviews of Laura Mercier's face products, especially their tinted moisturizers. this recently launched Flawless Face Kit from the brand is selling hot.

a nice Bottega Veneta look alike woven pouch comes with the set, it contains:

a 30ml foundation primer (a star product!)
a small undercover pot duo (secret camouflage and secret concealer and translucent setting powder)
1 secret camouflage brush (for concealer application)
1 camouflage powder brush (for foundation application)
a sponge
a powder puff
a compact light mirror (it's very cute, with two rows of LED lights on the mirror)

the value set is selling at HKD450 / USD58. it's great savings if you do the math. but it cannot be bought alone, you must purchase at least one foundation product to get it. and my choice is naturally the tinted moisturizer. it's the award-winning (in Style Best Beauty Buy 2009, Allure Editor's Choice 2007, 2008) product after all.

I immediately fell in love with the tinted moisturizer once I tried it. the coverage is very sheer and natural. it's got the right amount of moist and not oily even with the regular formula (there's also the oil free formula). face color is generally even out upon application but then again, it's very sheer, so for those who are looking for more coverage, you may need something else or use it with concealer on top to cover up blemishes and dark circles and set with the loose powder. my recommendation is to go a tone lighter than your own skin color. it will just light up your face and will not be too pale.

what's so good about the set is, you get to choose the color of the concealer pot duo. contrary to tinted moisturizer, the color of the concealer may look darker than your own skin color but they become lighter once spread out. so do sample it before you buy.

nail color is another hit for Christmas sale. I have a sudden urge to try out some crazy colors, especially glittery ones, not sure why. Deborah Lippmann has the best glitter nail lacquers. my picks are Today was a Fairytale (large glitter) and Superstar (fine glitter). Lippmann claims the new holiday color Today was a Fairytale contains virgin diamond powder whatever that means, it does give a very shiny glittery finish. multiple coats are needed to achieve solid coverage. Superstar (also a top seller) is a beautiful shiny copper color. I would wear it with a base coat of shimmery black color such as the YSL nail lacquer in Tuxedo Grey.

something you may not know about Lippmann when you think of the celebrity manicurist. she was professionally trained in music. back in the day while pursuing her dream to become a jazz singer and singing in clubs at night, she was waitressing by day. later she enrolled into beauty school and found her "hidden" talent in nails. the rest is history as she's now dubbed "one of the best manicurists in the US" and recently honored as the Nail Visionary at 2010 Cosmoprof, she still keeps up her passion in music and had released two albums to date. she has just performed at Feinstein's in NYC in november. her nail polish collection consists of nail colors that were created for some of the hottest music stars and named after pop songs. talk about the voice of color!
